Polymath designer Tamae Hirokawa's luxury brand Somarta looks set to become a major name in the global fashion scene, with global celebrities such as Madonna and Lady Gaga wearing her stunning designs.
Designer - Tamae Hirokawa
Tamae Hirokawa worked at Issey Miyaki for about 8 years, where she was in charge of knitwear for both the men's and women's lines. She stepped out on her own and created “SOMA DESIGN” in 2006, launching her clothing brand “SOMARTA” at the same time. In September 2006, she participated in the Spring/Summer Tokyo Collection Week. She was awarded the Newcomer’s Prize at the 25th Fashion Grand Prix and the Shiseido Sponsorship Award.
She introduced her installation artwork and interior furniture at the 2008 Milano Salone Canon “NEOREAL” exhibition and the TOYOTA “iQ×SOMARTA MICROCOSMOS” at DESIGNTIDE TOKYO.
Since then, Tamae has continued to push the boundaries of textile and clothing design. Her showcase 'skin series' is attracting ever-increasing attention as Tamae continues to develop this technically ground-breaking knitting technique ever further, most recently the centre of design museum exhibitions in both Japan and Australia.
